Typically, EIN is meant for the entire lifetime of your business. However, you must be aware that some circumstances need a change of EIN. These circumstances include the following:
- If you change the business name or location.
- If you filed for bankruptcy.
- If there is an S-corporation election.
- If there is a change in your business entity.
- If the corporation receives a new charter especially from the secretary of the state.
There are four ways to apply for an EIN
You must know that there four ways to apply for an EIN. The online application is the fastest way – within 20 minutes, you will have your EIN. After getting it, the EIN can be used immediately.
Other ways include phone, fax, and regular mail. Of the three options, the longest is regular mail because it could take four weeks. With this, you should try to avoid it. You only consider the phone if you are outside the United States. If you consider fax, make sure that you have a fax number.
